Portable APRS Unit

Here is a pic of my Portable APRS unit that I've also used to test my Raspberry Pi TNC setup to ensure it is working OK:

You'll notice the high quality blue elastic that holds the Mobilinkd TNC to the back of the Yaesu VX-6R radio (grin). The cable was also purchased from Mobilinkd and I'm running APRSDroid on my ASUS Android tablet. The tablet is connected to the TNC via a Bluetooth link. You can see the map displayed on the tablet, however I usually run it in log mode to see  all of the traffic that it receives or transmits.

  2. Hi John,
The elastic band I am using is one of the wide bands (3/8") that I pulled out of my elastic bank assortment. The TNC is so light, it doesn't take much to hold it on the back of the handheld. I believe that Jerry, VE6AB uses a case a little larger than his handheld, so that he can slide his TNC in behind.
Thanks for checking out my blog!
    Have a great evening & 73!

  3. Hi Robin,

I'm curious as to your configuration you ended up going with in the settings as I have this exact setup and as of now have had trouble getting it to transmit my packets to show up on aprs.fi.

  6. Hello Robin,
A search of the web found your blog post. I have the same radio vx6r with Mobilinkd TNC and still trying to set the radio for it to work APRS. I have another radio the TNC works with fine, no problem. I do not have the radio configured properly for it to work. Can you advise me on what settings you have used on yours?

    1. Hi John,
I've moved on from that setup because my android tablet has died!
And I've gone over to the dark side and bought a iPad.

However, I don't recall making any changes....
If I had to guess why it works on one radio and not another, I would suspect the cable you are using.
Is it the same cable connecting the TNC to the Radio?
